VIDEO OF THE WEEK: The brilliance of Ronaldinho… at Real Madrid
Last weekend’s Clasico was a mighty affair, with Barcelona pummeling Real Madrid into submission in a devastating manner. By the time Luis Suarez had put in Barca’s fourth, The Bernabeu could only stand and applaud their arch nemesis’, as the gulf in quality between the sides became profound.
That turn of events corresponded neatly with a similar turn of events a decade ago, when Barca went to Madrid and won 3-0. That day, it was the turn of the then best player in the world, Ronaldinho, to humiliate and have the home fans applaud.
In light of Pep Guardiola’s incredible rise with Barcelona, it is sometimes easy to overlook the Frank Rijkaard Barca era. Ludovic Guily, Rafael Marquez, and Deco joined the likes of some early youth products (Victor Valdes, Andres Iniesta) in a team that would eventually pip Arsenal to the Champions League in 2006. It’s worth remembering though that Ronaldinho was undoubtedly the star of that team, and the above video serves to emphasise just how good he was in his prime.
